I've learned that when students see their names posted, it keeps them motivated to move to the next step.  Each student masters a set of sight word cards and writes their name on the next level.  Then I use post-its to write down challenging words that specific students are having a tough time.  While some people think sight words are not important, I believe that using a good phonics-based program along with sight words makes a difference.
